Anchoring the Look with a 1920’s Logomark & Typefaces

When we first began discussing the logo, the founders Russell & Andrea Young wanted something that felt like a classic seal or stamp. Something with a vintage feel, but with a modern twist. We looked at 1920’s steel foundry’s for inspiration - A lot of them had logos that had this “branded” look. Although the initial typeface logos took a few workarounds, the stamp was a slam dunk off the first version. But it was not going to work on all applications, so we created multiple iterations to fit their different requirements, from social media to signage.

A Sign of Things to Come

The logo became a feature on various signage, posters and more, and so we adapted it for those uses. At the same time, we created supporting branding assets so that during the market's development period, onlookers would realize it was a curated collection of food + drinks, clothing and more.

An Environment for Local Businesses to Launch and Prosper

The market was built to be a jumping off point for local businesses.

Without the high-ticket rent of a traditional mall or retail space, vendors could move from a flea market or food truck straight into a fully functional space.

The model has proven to be a springboard for some of Orange County's most beloved businesses, such as Portola Coffee Roasters, The Kroft, Heirlooms and Hardware, and many more.

Advertising and Print Collateral

As the market grew so too did our relationship.
We became their marketing partner, building
asset after asset for them, from magazine ads to
flyers to social posts and more.

Moving a Space from Imagination to Virtual Reality

With the success of the Tustin Market, more Markets became slotted for California, and when they expanded into Arizona with the Union Brickyard, we were brought on to help solve a huge problem: How do you communicate how incredible something will be in the future, when your prospective tenant is staring at a concrete box?

The Market needed to sign tenants before the malls were built out and so we got to work with our partner Unit Studio, an exceptional interior design and visualization studio out of Italy, to create the virtual world of the mall’s interior.

Taking direction from the Market, we built out configurations of the Bar, restaurant, exterior and more. We created 17 graphics which gave an immersive visual representation of what was to come.

Bringing It All Together with the Vibe Book and Website

We injected these renderings into a Vibe Book to give potential tenants a true sense of what the development would look like, what it stood for and the energy surrounding it. We paired this with a supporting website, which positioned the market to secure buy-in from potential tenants, as well as owners of other buildings that the market was looking to expand into.

These tools combined with a winning concept enabled the mall to secure 80% occupancy even before the steel framing up.

Throughout our time working with the Market, we had the privilege of designing all kinds of fun collateral, across multiple channels, from giant posters to social media eye candy. The real treat that we experienced along the way has been meeting the amazing entrepreneurs who were often starting out at the Union Market and putting their heart and soul into what they loved. That, and working alongside the Youngs, who are truly a dynamic force of nature. All in all, a very inspiring time with some very creative people.

Studio Misfits has helped us brand our Union Market concept malls. We loved the job they did on our logo and branding so much that we had them do our website. Then, our signage and now our ad campaigns including our “Find Something New to Love” campaign. It just seems like they get it. They understand our aesthetic, and they far exceed our expectations on every project. Inspired, amazing designs every time.
